Section 5: Risks and Challenges with Doing International Work and Internships
You need to think through carefully the risks and challenges associated with any plans you make about going overseas.
- Financial considerations:
Many internships and overseas opportunities are NOT paid position. It is important to consider your own financial situation while exploring overseas opportunities. Many internships cover your travel and living expenses but you do not get paid any extra. Thus, if you are paying your own way through university then you may need to carefully consider if you are not getting paid over a summer how you will cover your tuition and other expenses during the school year. There are creative ways of gaining valuable overseas experience such as doing co-op work terms abroad, study abroad programs or after you complete your undergraduate degree. There are also opportunities to do overseas research through some graduate programs for students pursuing international interests at the masters and doctoral level. It is important that you consider international internships to complement your studies to meet your career goals and not in replacement of completing your degree. Remember your formal education and attaining multiple degrees should be a priority.
- Health issues are critical.
Many locations require you to take inoculations well in advance of your departure. Many places also require you to take malaria pills. Be sure to consult family doctor or a travel medical clinic way in advance of your departure.
- Safety issues are critical.
Make sure you are aware of all anticipated safety issues and risks associated with your travel destination. Do your homework in advance and be prepared in case of any unexpected incidences or emergencies. Make sure you view the Canadian Foreign Affairs Travel Advisory website: http://www.voyage.gc.ca/dest/sos/warnings-en.asp and register at the Canadian embassy at your destination.
- Ensure you have medical and travel insurance.
Most organizations require you to have medical and travel insurance prior to departure.
