Health planners and strategists are concerned with planning the development and delivery of health and welfare services or facilities at local, national or international levels. These professionals typically gain knowledge in developing policies, standards and infrastructure of health programs and systems within acute care, hospital or public health environments. Health planners often work in government public health agencies, as well as private and non-profit health services organizations. Public health planners assess health needs of populations and communities, analyze and evaluate health programs and policies, and develop strategies to meet public health objectives. Health planners in hospitals generally engage in planning, designing and implementing hospital services such as medical records, human resources and information management systems. Hospital health planners generally have expertise in health and hospital infrastructure, architecture, engineering and/or hospital management. Graduate programs in this field, such as the Master of Science in Health Policy and Management at the Aga Khan University, help prepare leaders in health systems research, strategic planning, management and development.
