Global health refers to the goal of understanding and addressing health issues that transcend national borders. Professionals practicing in global health conduct analyses and influence decision-making processes in international organizations with the goal of improving the delivery of health care services, especially for disadvantaged societies. Their expertise includes policy analysis, economics, finance and understanding health care systems. Global health policy professionals can work at a local or international level within private, non-profit or government organizations related to the fields of health care and international development. A technical advisor, for instance, may find a role in an international funding agency, a community development agency, or an international non-profit organization. An example of an organization that offers comprehensive health programs in the developing world is Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). In addition to providing direct assistance to under-privileged communities, AKHS also works with governments in developing countries to improve the delivery of health care services, and ensure the availability and accessibility of medical care in modern, efficient and cost-effective facilities.
