Health economists specialize in the decision-making process of how to allocate scarce resources for health care services.  This involves understanding the function of health care systems, both in hospital-based environments and public health, as well as studying health affecting social trends.

Health economists can work at an analyst or management level for a variety of institutions, including governments, research centres, universities, health services organizations and pharmaceutical companies.
