Stem Cell Research

Careers in Health and Medical Sciences
Category: postSecondary

Stem cell research has the potential to revolutionize human disease treatment.  Bone marrow transplants, for instance, can currently be used to treat leukemia.  In the future, a wider variety of diseases, such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, may be treated by technology derived from stem cell research.

This growing field continues to provide a wide variety of opportunities, including:

  • Stem cell biologist: focuses on researching stem cell technology, often working in universities, hospitals, government or non-government health agencies.
  • Stem cell consultant: works with public or private sector organizations with the development of products related to stem cell research.
  • Policy analyst: an increasingly important role given the nature of stem cell research and emerging bioethical issues, policy analysts in this field have a background in both stem cell research and public policy, and ultimately can work with government institutions, advocacy groups or private organizations.
