Pediatrics is a branch of medicine concerned with the development, care and treatment of infants, children and adolescents. As with other areas within health sciences, the study of pediatrics can lead to various specializations, such as:

  • Pediatric cardiologist: treats heart conditions in children.
  • Pediatric oncologist: specializes in the treatment of childhood cancer.
  • Pediatric neurologist: studies the treatment of nervous system disorders in children.

Pediatricians may typically practice in hospitals or medical centers, and may also find numerous opportunities in developing countries with international organizations that focus on children’s health. For example, the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), under the umbrella of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), has established community health programs, health centres, diagnostic centres and hospitals, which are designed to reach vulnerable groups in society, including children.
