The field of oncology deals with the treatment of cancer.  Oncologists are physicians who study, diagnose, and treat cancerous tumors, and often work with patients in hospitals or medical centers.  Oncologists may also opt for a career in research at universities, or at international or local health organizations.  The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi is one such institution, offering comprehensive services in cancer management, adult and pediatric oncology, chemotherapy, cancer rehabilitation and cancer support groups.

Medical students can choose to specialize in specific areas within oncology.  Some examples include:

  • Gynecological oncology: the study and treatment of malignancies arising in the female reproductive system.
  • Pediatric oncology: diagnosis and treatment of cancer in children.
  • Radiation oncology: radiation and treatment of cancer.
  • Medical oncology: assessment and management of patients with cancer.
  • Surgical oncology: the management of malignant cancers through surgery, including biopsy, tumor staging and tumor resection.
